DRINKING WATER PROBLEM CORRECTED
BOIL ADVISORY LIFTED
Customers of Cottonwood Mutual Water Company were notified on April 1, 2019 of a problem with our drinking water and were advised to boil their water. We are pleased to report that the problem has been corrected and that it is no longer necessary to boil your water prior to consumption. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
Cottonwood Mutual Water Company has followed EPA and the State Division of Drinking Water protocols to ensure your water is safe to drink by testing and repeating the testing for E. coli and Coliform bacteria together with performing various water chemistry analysis of the water from the impacted tank and throughout the distribution system.
We have replaced the broken lock and hasp on the tank lid and are currently getting bids for fencing to be placed around all critical infrastructure currently not fenced. In addition, we are soliciting help from our SCADA provider to increase security throughout the system.
We would ask that if any of you have information regarding the individual(s) responsible for the damage to the hatch lock and hasp that you notify the Morgan County Sheriff at 801-629-8221, or 801-829-6866.
As always, you may contact the water office at 801-876-3895 or mail Cottonwood Mutual Water Company at 4000 West Old Highway Rd, Mountain Green, UT 84050 with any comments or questions.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.
This notice is being sent to you by Cottonwood Mutual Water Company. Water System ID#: UT015013

UPDATE ON BOIL ADVISORY NOTICE

4/3/2019

We have obtained the results from our first round of water quality testing taken on Monday, April 1,
2019 and are pleased to report that all samples are consistent with the routine water testing conducted
three weeks ago. Meaning the samples taken April 1, 2019 were absent for e. Coli and Coliform
bacteria. In addition, the results regarding the water chemistry were all within the parameters
expected.
The State Division of Drinking Water asked we keep the boil advisory in place until results of the second
round of samples taken on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 pass both the bacteria testing and water chemistry.
We are anticipating results from the lab late afternoon on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 and are hopeful the
second set of samples will confirm what the first round showed and are consistent with the water
samples taken monthly.
Once we hear from the laboratory performing the analysis and gaining approval from the State Division
of Drinking Water, we will notify you that the Boil Advisory has been lifted. We will provide notice via a
hand delivered flyer to each customer door, a posting to our website at www.cottonwoodwater.com,
and let the news media know the advisory has been lifted.
Please know, we have replaced the broken lock and hasp on the tank lid and are currently getting bids
for fencing to be placed around all critical infrastructure currently not fenced. In addition, we are
soliciting help from our SCADA provider to install intrusion alarms on all tank access hatches and
pumphouse doors to better protect the system from future intrusions.
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work through this event.
Sincerely,
Cottonwood Mutual Water Company

Drinking Water Warning

DRINKING WATER WARNING

System City water could be contaminated as a result of a lock
securing a storage tank access lid being broken off and the water
in the tank being compromised by unauthorized individual(s).
ADVISORY TO BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING
Sometime between February 6, 2019 and April 1, 2019 someone broke and removed the lock
securing one of our lower storage tank access lids. We noticed this breech today (Monday,
April 1, 2019) during a routine inspection of our facilities. We have contacted the State Division
of Drinking Water informing them of this breech. They have advised us to issue this advisory
while we await testing results from the water quality lab. It takes at least 24 hours to get results
from the samples. Until samples can confirm the status of the water quality you are advised to
boil the water before using.
This is just an advisory, not an order. A boil order is when there are confirmed results for
E.coli in the system. We have not had any positive samples for coliform bacteria. When the tank
lock was discovered damaged on April 1, 2019 we immediately took coliform bacteria samples.
Results will be available Tuesday April 2, with confirmation results on Wednesday April 3.
What should I do?
$ WE ADVISE THAT YOU BOIL THE WATER BEFORE USING. Bring all water to a boil, let it
boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water
should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food
preparation. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.
$ People at increased risk should seek advice about drinking water from their health care
providers.
We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you are no longer advised to boil your
water. We anticipate resolving the problem as soon as Wednesday afternoon, April 3, 2019.
We will continue to provide updates on the situation at www.cottonwoodwater.com
For more information, please contact the water office at 801-876-3895 or 4000 West Old
Highway Rd, Mountain Green, UT 84050. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of
infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 426-
4791. The Utah Division of Drinking Water is available for consumer questions at 801-536-4986.
Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may
not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools,
and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by
hand or mail.
